Description
The Mako is the most recognisable sports family in Orient's catalogue, and the Orient Mako GMT Watch RA-BC0003L30B is the version that adds a second time zone to it. A red 24-hour hand runs with the hour hand, and reading it against the rotating bezel puts the time of another country in front of you without losing the local one. It is a collector's edition built around a very simple idea: one dial, two zones, no battery. The 24-hour hand is linked to the 12-hour hand and cannot be set independently, so the second zone is obtained by combining the GMT hand with the graduated bezel, the way travellers have done it for decades.
Inside is the F6P22, an in-house automatic mechanical calibre with 22 jewels, bidirectional winding, manual winding and hacking seconds, so the watch can be set to the exact second. Stated autonomy is over 40 hours and accuracy runs between +25 and -15 seconds per day. The stainless steel case measures 42.8 mm wide, 49.5 mm high and 13.4 mm thick, sits under a sapphire crystal and closes with a screw-down crown and a screwed case back engraved with the dolphin design. The unidirectional bezel has 120 positions and a 24-hour scale in a two-tone blue and black finish coordinated with the dial. Water resistance is 20 bar (200 m), which covers swimming and open water, although this is not a dive watch compliant with the ISO standard. The SUS316L steel bracelet is 22 mm wide with a three-fold deployant clasp, push button and safety lock.
Orient has been building its own movements in Japan for decades, and that independence explains why an automatic GMT with sapphire, screwed case back and diver-derived looks arrives without any fuss. The Mako is the watch many collectors use to enter Japanese mechanics, and the details are all there: wide bar indices, an arrow-shaped hour hand, an elongated diamond minute hand and high-intensity Luminous Light on the markers and the hour hand. The navy blue dial, darkening towards its edges, together with the black upper half and blue lower half of the bezel, is what holds the whole design together.
