Persol Sunglasses PO3398S-181/R5 58mm

We present the Persol PO3398S-181/R5, a sunglass proposal that embodies the characteristic duality of the Turin house: functional optical engineering and classic Italian elegance coexisting in a single frame. The rectangular shape is resolved in acetate with a polished finish on the front and cobalt temples, a combination that brings artisan presence without resorting to gratuitous ornamentation. The 58 mm lens width with 19 mm bridge and 145 mm temple positions the model in size XL, a balanced proportion that sits without invading the face and respects the oval / round features it is meant to accompany.

The lens is the functional heart of this reference. Persol has opted for base 6 in crystal with blue tinting, faithful to the Turin tradition of hand-polished mineral glass the brand has defended since 1917. The surface incorporates an external anti-reflective tint treatment, and UV400 protection is guaranteed by filtering the entirety of the UVA and UVB spectrum. It is neither polarised nor mirrored: the code here is subtlety, not effect.

The signature detail is on the temple. Over the material appears the silver Meflecto arrow, house Meflecto patent since 1937, accompanied by the engraved "P" logo on the Crystal lens and the Persol seal on the inside of the temple. The Meflecto system incorporates articulated internal springs in the temples that allow the frame to adapt to any cranial anatomy without losing shape. It is not an ornament, it is a piece of functional mechanics. The polished finish on the front catches occasional reflections while the cobalt temples bring just the right contrast to fit a classic Italian everyday environment without being invasive.

Persol was born in Turin in 1917 when Giuseppe Ratti, a Piedmontese optician with a workshop on via Caboto, patented the first "Protector Solis" sun lenses, sun protector, designed for military pilots and high-altitude sportsmen. In 1937 he patented the Meflecto system, temples with articulated internal springs that adapt to any head without losing shape, and the silver arrow that appears on the temple has remained the house signature. Persol eyewear is made entirely in Italy, retains the hand-polished Crystal mineral glass lens and preserves the precise Turin artisan mechanics. Every pair is an object of optical engineering where nothing is decorative: the arrow works, the spring works, the crystal corrects and filters. Heir to a century of uncompromising Piedmontese craft.
