The word cyclone was coined in 1848 by Henry Piddington, an English mariner who studied the storms of the Bay of Bengal. He took it from the Greek kyklos, circle, because he saw that the wind in those storms did not blow in a straight line: it turned around a calm centre, the eye.
Since then, cyclone has named any storm that spins, and in everyday speech, anyone who walks into a room and sets everything in motion.
Police chooses this word for a collection of automatic men's watches.
